1/10 Scale Electric Buggy:
Traxxas RAD-2 (1992) - 2301 / 2306 / 2310
|
Introduced by Traxxas in 1992, the 2WD Rad-2 Buggy was available as an unassembled kit - # 2301 - with a mechanical speed controller and 30T RS-540SH motor, RTR - # 2306 - with an XL-1 ESC, motor and radio system, or RTR - # 2310 - with a mechanical speed controller, motor and radio system.
The Traxxas model is based on a molded plastic chassis, with a gear type differential, coil spring over oil filled dampers, slipper clutch, universal drive-shafts and oilite bushings, ring type bearings.
To race the Traxxas RAD-2, it calls for fine tuning to attain better steering response and improve grip when cornering so you don't slide off the side of the track. Minute changes can make huge advancements. Our easy to understand list will show you how and lead you to the optimum Set-up to put you in front of the rest on the track.

Buying a Used Traxxas RAD-2 Buggy (and What to look for)
Make a General Visual Inspection
Check the Body-Shell
If the body shell of your Traxxas RAD-2 is broken, ripped or damaged in any way, this can be easily repaired with rubber solution glue. Also, for added protection and if available for your RAD-2 model, fit an under guard to stop dirt and gravel entering the chassis. Drive Shafts and Turnbuckles
Examine the Drive System
The gearbox of your used Buggy should be opened up to check for gear wear and lubrication. A thin coat of grease is often used on internal gears and although this is fine for basic running around on the back yard, if you intend to race your Buggy at a higher level, this should be removed and replaced with racing oil (ZX1 or Teflon Oil). Of course, this should be reapplied after each race meeting. Pinions and Spur Gears
Don't Neglect the Ball-Joints
Ball joints always cause problems. For top level Electric Buggy racing, the plastic ball connectors should be checked and if deemed necessary changed after every meeting. A simple thing like a loose fitting connector popping off could easily end your race, so better safe than sorry. Steering Servo and Servo-Saver
Stabilizers
If body roll on your Traxxas RAD-2 is a problem, handling can be improved with the use of stabilizers, anti roll or sway bars, stiffer tuning springs and, or, thicker silicone oil in the dampers. Don't Forget those Bearings

Hints, Tips and Information
Choosing a Transmitter
When you first started in RC, you may have purchased a package that came with the car kit, motor, battery, charger, ESC and radio system complete. The transmitter was probably just a basic steer wheel, or stick type, with nothing more than forward, reverse, left, right and simple trim settings to centralise the servo and ESC. |

Tires for RC ModelsSponge (Foam) Tires
Sponge Tires can be purchased either pre mounted, glued and trued on the rims, or separately. Fitting the Tires onto the rims can be messy, so here are a few tips to make it a bit easier.
